For the third year running the San Sebastian Festival will subtitle its galas live in three languages thanks to its collaboration with the Royal Board on Disability
- The initiative is possible yet again this year thanks to the Festival's collaboration with the Royal Board on Disability, through the Spanish Centre of Subtitling and Audiodescription.
- This edition also has the support of the Carlos III University in Madrid, which provides the Festival with the UC3Mtitling accessibility tool; it similarly has the collaboration of ArcelorMittal Gipuzkoa, Fundación Adecco and APTES.
- This year will include organisation of the round table "Latest advances in Cinema for People with Disability".
For seven years the San Sebastian Festival has been reaching out to audiences with sensory impairment, and for three of these it has been doing so in three languages. All of its galas will be simultaneously subtitled live in Spanish, Basque and English on special screens forming part of the stage scenery thanks to the Royal Board on Disability through the Spanish Centre of Subtitling and Audiodescription.
Other contributors to the initiative are the Carlos III University, provider of the technology developed for live subtitling, UC3Mtitling, which will be used in the galas together with the stenotypes in all three languages. The initiative also enjoys the support and collaboration of ArcelorMittal Gipuzkoa, Fundación Adecco and APTES.
Since 2008, the San Sebastian Festival has worked to close the gap between audiences with sensory impairment and the activities developed. This commitment to inclusion means that we continue to be the first film festival in Spain to ensure that its main ceremonies are open to all people with sensory diversity.
The hearing impaired will be able to enjoy not only the opening and closing galas but also the galas at which the Donostia Awards are presented to Benicio del Toro and Denzel Washington in recognition of their lifetime achievements, all live.
The members of the round table are Jesús Celada, Coordinator of the Real Board on Disability (RPD), Guadalupe Melgosa, Assistant Director General of Promotion and International Relations at the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) and Ángel García Crespo, representative of the Spanish Centre of Subtitling and Audiodescription (CESyA).
